Maldaner's Restaurant & Catering Since 1884
Description
Established in 1884, Maldaner's Restaurant and Catering is one of Springfield's finest restaurants. The Oldest Restaurant on Route 66 now offers the experience of literally "Eating on 66", with outside patio seating including at the parklet, where you get to dine on the actual Mother Road pavement in historic downtown Springfield! This is truly a unique 66 experience. If you have visited The Old State Capitol, Frank Lloyd Wright's Dana-Thomas House or the State Capitol, you can imagine the wonderful celebrations held at Maldaner's from the turn of the last century to the present day. Maldaner's has been located on Historic Route 66 since the road began!

Today, under the guidance of Chef-Owner Michael Higgins, Maldaner's respects tradition while offering the best of contemporary American fine dining in this historical setting. Chef Higgins features seasonal local and regional ingredients influenced by Mediterranean composition and preparation. Heirloom vegetables, humanely raised meats and Slow Food all artistically prepared and presented. Brand new to the menu is the Maldaner's Route 66 Burger! Additional food specialties Maldaner's is famous for include Salmon, One-Half Chicken and Beef Wellington. Maldaner's utilizes Farm to Table food from Springfield's local Farmers Market.

Michael Higgins and his wife Nancy Howard Higgins had worked as executive chef and pastry chef at the restaurant for several years before becoming the owners in 1995. Maldaner's is Springfield's oldest restaurant, founded in 1884 by John Maldaner, a Milwaukee baker, who first operated his confectionery and catering business from two other Springfield sites. In 1894, Maldaner moved the business to the current location on 222 South Sixth Street, which later became Route 66 as well. As Maldaner's thrived through the early 1900s, a young employee named Walter Tabor was added to the staff. Tabor eventually became sole owner and manager after the death of John Maldaner and his son Charles, who for a time was a co-owner with Tabor.

Maldaner's is a Green Business Certified Platinum and has Silver Recognition by the League of American Bicyclists. Maldaner's is a bike-friendly business on Route 66 and a great stop when you bring your bikes through the downtown on Springfield's bike trails. Maldaner's offers a 10% discount on the menu for bicyclists. You can also tour the restaurant's rooftop gardens and beehives that overlook Route 66. The gardens feature native plants from Illinois that even attract Monarch Butterflies. View the solar panels that help power the restaurant, making it one of the few businesses deriving power from this solar polar driver technology. The entire facility also features Sensible Innovations Beacons technology for the aid of the Visually Impaired.

Maldaner's bar includes beer from local brewery Rolling Meadows and the new 6.6 ounce "66 Negroni". This was one of Al Capone’s favorite drinks, and is made with premium bourbon, Campari, sweet vermouth and a dash of bitters. The upstairs banquet room is ADA accessible, can accommodate up to 120 seated diners, up to 200 for cocktail parties and includes a private bar. The downstairs Main Dining Room seats between 50 and 120. The Map Room seats 30 people. Special menus can be arranged for lunch and dinner or Maldaner’s will build to suit your taste. The facilities are audio-visual capable. Walk-ins and reservations are welcome. Bus tours welcome for banquets and catering. Maldaner's is truly "Where Local Began".
